China Camp

Spent the day at China Camp Village and painted on the small dock down the hill from the main parking lot. It was great to meet so many other painters from both, the Benicia and North Bay Plein Air groups. We ended the evening with a bbq cookout and critiques.

I really enjoyed painting out into the water. The dock didn't shake, but the winds really picked up around 1pm...and my easel began to shake. When packing up, I really thought I'd drop a couple gouache tubes into the water...luckily I didn't.

Here's a closer look at the painting.

China Camp

Thanks to everyone that was able to make it out on Sunday. Beautiful warm weather, clear skies, friendly folks and plenty of food and drinks!!! Many new faces from the Meetup group. Artists drove from all over. One from Oakland, a few from San Francisco and some San Jose folks attempted to drive down to join us. We'll see you again for next months session.

China Camp - June 28th, 2009

Here are my paintings from this weekend's plein air session at China Camp in San Rafael. It was nice to meet the Benicia Plein Air group.

China Camp

What a great day for a paint out at China Camp. It was nice meeting up with follow plein air painters some new faces and some familiar ones. I wish I could have stayed to the end for the potluck and see all the lovely plein air paintings as the day progressed. Here's my painting before the tide came in.

Lafayette Park, SF

The first painting is the view looking towards downtown on Washington & Clay in the early Afternoon. This was my first attempt in painting a cityscape in oils. I found it to be quite a challenge as I was trying to match very specific geometric shapes that I don't normally paint. It was a good exercise in shapes and to make things easier for myself I should add a few square flat brushes the next time I paint a cityscape.

My Second painting is the view looking down Octavia street and a partially covered Alcatraz.

Lafayette Park

Fresh sketch from this weekend’s paintout with the North Bay Plein Air group (well three of us – maybe a bigger group next time? maybe some USK’ers?). So anyway, I hear a rumor that this is Danielle Steel’s house. It certainly has a romantic wedding cake look to it. I hope it’s true, cuz it’s encouraging to see an author with a weekend retreat like this…
