3:30am - 6:30pm - Let's Paint!
6:30pm - 7:00pm - Let's meet back at Parking Lot to share our findings, techniques or just to chat (not a critique).
Directions
To get to Sky Oaks, take Sir Francis Drake Boulevard west into Fairfax. Turn left onto Bank Steet at the stop light, then left onto Broadway, then right onto Bolinas Road. Follow Bolinas Road west through downtown Fairfax past Deer Park Villa. Turn left onto Sky Oaks Road—look for the signs directing you to Lake Lagunitas. (If you see the Meadow Club golf course then you've gone too far.) The Lake Lagunitas Picnic Area is about 1.5 miles past the Watershed Headquarters.
From San Francisco: Take Highway 101 North to the Central San Rafael exit. Make a left turn on Third Street. Stay on Third. It will turn into Sir Francis Drake Blvd. Stay on Sir Francis Drake until you get to the Fairfax town limits. You will go over a small hill and as you head down look for a gas station on your left. Make a left immediately after the gas station at the wooden “Fairfax” sign (unfortunately there is a well hidden street sign that many motorist do not see, but the cross-street is Pacheco). At the stop sign make a right onto Broadway. At the next stop sign make a left onto Bolinas Rd. Go up Bolinas Road approximately 1½ miles (you will pass the Deer Park Villa restaurant). At 700 Bolinas Road there is a wooden sign on your left saying “Lake Lagunitas.” Make that left turn onto Sky Oaks Road; go up approximately 1/4 mile and Sky Oaks Watershed Headquarters is on the left at the crest of the hill. You are also at the entrance to Lagunitas and Bon Tempe Lakes. (If you miss the Sky Oaks Road turn-off and you get to the Meadow Club golf course you have gone too far.)
From the East Bay: Go across the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge. Head north on Highway 101. Take the Central San Rafael exit. Follow instructions from above (DIRECTIONS)
From Sonoma: Take Highway 101 south. Take the Central San Rafael exit. Make a right onto Third Street. Follow the instructions from above (DIRECTIONS).

I met the North Bay Plein Air Painters in Marin County this last Sunday. They returned to St. Vincent Church on an initially overcast day. Later the sun decided to show its face and all 11 of the painters were glad for it, I think. The artists worked in oils, watercolor and pastel (me).
We all found different subjects to paint: the church, the courtyard fountains, the arched doorways and corridors, the surrounding countryside and gardens.

These plein air paintings were done at St. Vincent's Church in San Rafael. Our Meetup group got together to paint as we do every month.
This first one I did in about an hour and a half, which I thought I'd spent a lot less time on it. The second one I did in about 45 minutes.

I went with a different approach on this piece. I've found that it's really hard to start with a more muted palette and end on a bright note. I instead started with my brightest primary color and mixed to a more natural tone.

My last painting of January at Saint Vincent's Church in San Rafael. I meet up with some pals and other North Bay Plein Air Painters, it was a good turn out with about eleven artist. The day started out very gray and heavy fog, as you can see the sun came out and I ended up with a very different painting than when I started.

I've been thinking for awhile now that I should to get back to doing some landscapes. I've been finding it harder to go out on my own lately, and much more inclined to work in groups, meaning most of what I've been doing has been life drawing. But this means lately I've been doing practically nothing else aside from that, and I've been feeling like it's become a somewhat unbalanced practice. Fortunately I came across a painting group (accidentally, through a google reference search in fact), and spent yesterday in the idyllic grounds of St. Vincent's Church in Marin.
